Asymptotically safe quantum gravity is an approach to quantum gravity. It posits that the fundamental quantum structure of spacetime is governed by quantum scale symmetry. In physical terms, this implies that nature is scale symmetric, or self-similar, at distance scales below the Planck length. In formal terms, this implies that a Renormalisation Group fixed point dominates the ultraviolet behaviour of the theory. Based on a proposal by S. Weinberg, its modern development is largely based on functional Renormalisation Group techniques, adapted to quantum gravity by M. Reuter. In his honour, the Renormalisation Group fixed point is called the "Reuter fixed point". Nowadays, numerous research groups worldwide explore asymptotically safe gravity and related approaches, as well as the interplay between quantum gravity and matter and phenomenological consequences of asymptotically safe gravity.Â
